István Hutter (b. Hungary) is a visual artist with a background in illustration and animation. More recently, he has focused on experiments with immersive media and video installations. His work characteristically maintains a strong storytelling bent while seeking to disrupt established narrative structures. His expressive repertory prominently features the use of dark humour, satire, dream imagery, and symbolism. His spontaneous working method embraces “mistakes” and “imperfections.”
Hutter explores the resurgence of the absurd in contemporary popular culture and social media as a coping mechanism for the pervasive anxiety experienced by millennials and subsequent generations. He investigates the paradoxical potential of using absurdity as a means to extract meaning from nonsense in an increasingly complex and interconnected world, in which realities cannot be explained by absolute truths.
In addition to his autonomous work, he also engages in editorial and design-related illustration projects, focusing on analogue printmaking and small-scale publication.
